Holley Schramski, the former associate vice president of finance at the University of Georgia, recognized that her team was performing a lot of manual labor for their data processes. She recalls her associate controller being frustrated as Excel kept crashing while she tried to wrap up financial statements. Schramski said that UGA was “never going to evolve from a transactional operation to becoming more analytical unless we stopped all of our manual processes and started automating processes for our team.”

What’s the best thing about being a new analyst? It is the power to be creative and change the future for the better. I’ve spent the last year developing my skills alongside some of the brightest talent in the industry. Here’s what I learned during my first year:

Snowflake, a modern data management platform, allows you to securely share and manage data. Snowflake works as a data warehouse or data lake platform or as an integrated component in your larger, existing platform. Snowflake is often used as a data source for modern analytics tools. Scalability, affordability, seamless implementation and ease of maintenance are just a few ways Snowflake shines above its competition and legacy data management platforms.  

Key among concerns with Novel Coronavirus COVID-19 is its rate of contagion and deadly effects on those susceptible. Recognizing that every day matters in flattening the curve, the Ohio Department of Health is increasing transparency to citizens, and using data to show if social distancing, raised awareness for proper hand-washing, travel restrictions, and other measures are buying more time for the state health systems as they prepare for potential waves and surges of the disease.

Earlier this week, I had an opportunity to sit down with Jeff Brown and Jason Wood from Avaap (formerly Navigator Management Partners). Avaap is an Alteryx partner and they are currently working with the state of Ohio to help run the InnovateOhio Platform.

Tableau

Tableau is an interactive data visualization software. Its drag and drop functionality empowers users from all technical skill levels access to the ability to drive actionable insights traditionally buried within stale reports. Generating visual cues, Tableau quickly identifies critical narratives spread across averages to outliers. Tableau capabilities include drill-through features which allow users to easily shift granularity levels, hover over tool tips which detail notes that provide guidance around the information users are consuming, and forecasting compatibility built within the tool and the access to pull in other advanced programs such as R and Python code.

We’re a Yelp nation and want to hear what our peers think about everything from restaurant reviews to products on Amazon. It is no different at work. Senior leadership rolls out a new project and people want to know what it’s really about. They want to know the dirt and they want to hear it from the peers who they think have an inside perspective.
